Meet Ellie

June 11, 2011

So it seems the past few blog posts on our web site have been sad ones with the losses of both our family dogs. After some time and careful consideration, we have adopted this little one pictured above. Her name is Ellie and she is exactly eight weeks old. She was born at the Sugar Land Animal Services shelter on April 24, 2011 with eight other siblings. Ellie was the runt of the litter making her about two-thirds the size of the others. Her momma is a red heeler who came to the shelter pregnant and with all kinds of health problems, including ring worms that she had passed down to her unborn babies. All babies were treated in-utero and after birth. One of them didn’t make it, but the runt remained strong! Nobody knows what the dad was but we think he must have been part Boston Terrier because that’s what Ellie and a few of her siblings look like (although they were all different colors with lots of different characteristics…none portraying their mom). We picked her up on Wednesday for a “sleep over,” which is basically a trial run to make sure we definitely want her and no health issues arise. We fell so in love with her there was really no turning back! On Saturday we went to go sign the adoption papers. She is officially a Feinstein!

Ellie is keeping us very busy. In two days, we have both lost two pounds just from staying so busy and following her around. On the contrary, Ellie has already gained 1.5 pounds (now a whopping 3.5 pounds!) so we know she is thriving in her new environment. Ellie is teething and therefore putting everything in her mouth including our toes, hands and hair. We are told it’s a passing phase although she does have some Austrailian Cattle Dog in her, which means she might try to herd us at times if we don’t show her who’s boss! She makes the most adorable noises when she sleeps and finds the most unusual positions that appear so uncomfortable, but whatever floats her boat. We are working on potty training and she seems to get it half of the time. She’s really smart so we know this won’t be too hard in the end.

Kacey, our cat, is a little moody about the whole situation. She is slowly coming around. I don’t blame her after 8 years of being the only pet, but I think she will end up liking the company and maybe even use some of her very nurturing qualities on Ellie. It’s better now for her to share the attention in preparation for mini humans that come in the future!

We’d like to thank everyone for their support in this and we know Ellie looks forward to playing with all of you and giving you a few good nibbles.
